UPCOMING STAFF & SUPERVISORS TRAINING
CONVERSATIONS ON CIVILITY
A culture of civility benefits all people within a community. It allows individuals to engage in conversations and speak openly about their viewpoints. With civility and respect, a range of ideas can be considered without participants feeling marginalized or excluded. Civil discussion and discourse is healthy — it's a way to introduce different opinions, tackle disagreements, and empower people.
This training program is based upon the work of P.M. Forni, an award-winning professor at Johns Hopkins University. In 2000 he founded The Civility Initiative at Johns Hopkins and over the years has continued to teach courses on the theory and history of manners. His book Choosing Civility (2002) has sold more than 100,000 copies.
All employees, including supervisors and staff members, are strongly encouraged to attend all three sessions to receive the best benefit from the program. Sessions start Tuesday, January 22nd. At the conclusion of the program, the trainer, Al Hodgeman, will engage participants in developing a "Statement of Civility," which will be shared with the Staff Council for consideration.

Des Moines Civic Center Now Des Moines Performing Arts
As the college has a partnership with the Des Moines Civic Center that allows our faculty and staff to purchase discount E-Tickets to select shows, we would like to share the exciting news that the Civic Center is now known as Des Moines Performing Arts. Please see the official announcement attached to this email.
This change has no effect on our partnership or the discount E-ticket purchase process. One important change you do need to be aware of is their new website: http://www.desmoinesperformingarts.org/
If you have never purchased E-tickets through the discount program before, you can find instructions to do so by logging into your college Pioneer Web account at: https://pioneerweb.grinnell.edu/webapps/portal/frameset.jsp. Once logged into your P-web account, click on the "Community" tab near the top, center of the page. Look on your page for the"My Organizations Plus" content area. The "Employment Resources" organization will be in the list of "organizations in which you are participating". After you click on the "Employment Resources" link you will see the "DSM Performing Arts" link on the left.
If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Human Resources.
