Absentee Voting for the General Election

Tuesday, November 6, 2012

If you need or prefer to vote by absentee ballot for the general election, here is how to do it.

Go to the web-site of the Poweshiek County Auditor: www.poweshiekcounty.org/auditor1.htm

There you will find forms to request an absentee ballot and to register to vote in Poweshiek County.  Down-load either or both forms as you may need them, fill them out and mail the completed form or forms to the Poweshiek County Auditor, P. O. Box 57, Montezuma, IA 50171.  You can do this whenever it suits your schedule, including now; the Auditor generally mails out the absentee ballots around 20 September.  Or you may simply drop your form or forms off at the Auditor's Office in the Court House in Montezuma.

It is a good idea to return your completed ballot promptly, especially if you are temporarily abroad in a place where the delivery of mail may be slow.

There will also be opportunities to vote at satellite early voting stations set up in various parts of the county, including Grinnell.  These will be announced well in advance of the time and place of the stations.  Voting at a satellite station is simply a variation of absentee voting:  the voter fills out an absentee-ballot request, receives a ballot, and casts it.

In every instance, you must supply the address of your residence.  If you wish to receive your ballot at a post-office box, that is OK, but giving that P. O. Box number as your residential address will not do.

Diana Dawley, the Poweshiek County Auditor, or one of her staff will be glad to answer any questions you may have at 641-623-5443.
