Wednesdays 6:30am-7:30am
Attend either or both weekly sessions.
Coach Joe Zimsen '92 brings his swimming and coaching experience back to the Grinnell College pool to add to the Wellness programs. Faculty and staff (and spouses/partners) of all abilities, ages, and interests are welcome to join him to improve fitness, speed, strength, and technique with this sport. Triathletes, competitive swimmers, lap swimmer and beginners will all find a place in this program. Workouts will be provided based on ability, and will focus on helping all swimmers build their ability – whatever that may be at the start! Each practice will feature technique drills to improve skills as well as challenging sets to build strength and stamina. Bring goggles, your suit and a desire to reach new levels in your swimming!
Joe was a leader on the Grinnell College Men's swim team from 1988-1992, and was captain of the team from 1990-1992. He came to Grinnell after a successful high school career, where he earned 10th place in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle at the Washington State championships. He continued to improve at Grinnell, setting numerous school and pool records individually and on relay teams. In 1991, Joe earned All-America honors at the NCAA Division III National Championships. After graduating, Joe continued coaching and swimming with US Masters, working with swimmers ranging in age from 5 to 85. Some athletes were fearful of the water, while others were National Champions. Joe has placed in the top 5 at Nationals in 1996, 1999, and 2001, and has been on winning triathlon relay teams in 1999, 2010, and 2011. Most recently, Joe was head coach with the Hurricanes Swim Club in Hopkins, MN, and was the Triathlon-Swimming coach for Team in Training in Minneapolis.
