The activities will be limited to 50 children, and registrations will be accepted in the order in which they're received, so register early!

Book Drive

I, Kesho Y. Scott, Professor of Sociology and American Studies, have launched a project in Beijing, China.

I have been visiting, teaching and researching in China (Nanjing, Shanghai and Beijing) for the last five years. It has been exciting and challenging for reasons I am sure you can imagine. I have taught American Studies and Sociology at four universities in the country. My research area has been Sexual Harassment of University Women.

Joining me in this venture to establish an American Studies English Reading Library, is my brother John Scott, a former public school teacher in the Des Moines Public School District and Coordinator of the Title III - ESL program for the State of Iowa, and his wife Macie Scott, currently working in the Des Moines Public Schools. John is now an English teacher in the Beijing 21st Century International School in the Haidian District of Beijing.

The school is an exciting and innovative place for not only Chinese students but also for about 400 non-Chinese students from all over the world including Europe, Africa and the Americas. They offer scholarships to disadvantaged students in the local community.

We have been building a partnership with Beijing 21st Century International School grades K-12 for two reasons. First, I am interested in creating in the future a Grinnell student-teaching exchange program. Second, exporting American culture is one of our greatest assets and this effort to "fill up this crate" is an act of global civic sharing and citizenship.

We don't need your money; we need your unused books!

Beijing International has approved and will pay for us to ship an entire crate of books to Beijing in mid-November from Des Moines.

The book drive needs books written in English that can be read primarily by students K-12. The books don't necessarily have to be new, they can be used ones but in good condition.

They can be popular novels or some general college texts. Paperbacks are preferred, Of course, they lack books in various areas of study such as teaching methods, statistics, all Social Science disciplines, Area Studies (Latina, African, Asian and Native Americans, women's and American Studies).

No historical period is excluded. Classics are welcomed and serial, comic and educational magazines, such as Highlights great!

They will appreciate all multiple copies of any book. I have only one crate and I intend to fill it. Please be mindful that books in the best conditions are best.

I would request that you please send your name and email address with your donation so that the young people of the school can thank you personally. I would be willing to pick up any books at your convenience at my email address: scottk1@grinnell.edu

Faculty/Staff Connect Lunches

Ever wonder what the people across campus or down the hall are like, or what they care about? Join your colleagues for the weekly Faculty/Staff Connect lunches. These informal lunches give you the opportunity to meet people from across campus, to chat with close colleagues, and to help improve the community at the College. Faculty/Staff Connect meets every Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Marketplace Pavilion (the "whale room" at the West end of the dining hall). Pay regular Marketplace rates at the door or stop in the Dining Services office (JRC 2nd floor) to purchase five meals (with cash or personal check) for only $25 ($5 for each meal!). Feel free to join us weekly, monthly, or whenever you find it convenient! For more information, contact the Office of Human Resources.

Volunteer to Review Grinnell Prize Nominations

Faculty and staff are needed to review nomination essays for the 2013 Grinnell Prize! Students, faculty/staff, and alumni review nominations and help advance nominees demonstrating innovation and impact to be reviewed by the Selection Committee. The review will take place during the last two weeks in November, taking about 3-5 hours of time. Volunteers can sign up online or email Prize Coordinator Melisa Chan.
