Discover Grinnell Programs – September 21 and October 5

The Office of Admission is gearing up for our annual Discover Grinnell Programs on Friday, September 21 and Friday, October 5, 2012. These programs are designed for prospective students and their families to experience the Grinnell College community. We make every effort to present a thoughtful and comprehensive picture of the academic, co-curricular, and extracurricular opportunities available to our students.

During the Discover Grinnell Programs, students are able to spend the night in one of the residence halls with a current student host, attend class, eat in the dining hall, and take a tour of campus. We also offer a variety of informational sessions featuring faculty, staff and current students.

We rely on the entire college community to make the Discover Grinnell Programs a success. We could not offer these programs without great cooperation and flexibility from all staff, faculty and current students. We would like to thank the entire Grinnell College community for generously hosting the prospective students and their families!

The Discover Grinnell Programs are coordinated by Jennifer Hirsch, Assistant Director of Admission and Coordinator of Campus Visits and Events, with a great deal of help from the rest of the Admission staff. We are always looking to further refine the program and welcome any questions or suggestions for the programs. Please contact Jennifer Hirsch (otottjen) with questions and comments.

Pioneer Alert Emergency Notification System

Emergency preparedness on college campuses has received national attention in recent years. In 2008, Grinnell implemented the Pioneer Alert emergency notification system to alert members of the campus community to severe weather or other campus emergencies.

Beginning with the 2012-13 academic year, the Pioneer Alert messaging system will now be "Opt Out" only. "Opt Out" means that all members of the campus community will receive emergency notifications from the Pioneer Alert system, including text messaging, unless individuals take deliberate action to be removed from the system.

Effective Aug. 20, all Grinnell students, faculty and staff with a P-card I.D. were entered into the Pioneer Alert system, using information on file. For students, information was uploaded from the Office of the Registrar; for faculty and staff, from the Office of Human Resources.

Anyone currently registered for Pioneer Alert should expect to receive annual test messages, as well as emergency messages as determined by the Grinnell College Emergency Preparedness Team. To verify or change the system information on file for you, log on to Pioneerweb, click on "My Grinnell" and select "Pioneer Alert" from the Resources navigation on the left.

If you do not wish to receive emergency text messages from the Pioneer Alert notification system, you must actively decline this service. Log on to Pioneerweb, click on "My Grinnell," select "Pioneer Alert" from the Resources navigation on the left and follow the instructions to terminate your account, or text STOP to 79516 to cancel alerts, recognizing that this will impact your campus emergency notification.
