Everything under the sun

The Spring 2012 Issue of The Grinnell Magazine takes a look at Grinnell College’s relationship with the world and the universe.

The cover story features astrophysicist Richard Fisher ’61, talking about how solar storms can — and soon may — wreak havoc on electrical and electronic infrastructures in the developed world.

The rest of the issue features Grinnell College as both a global village and a portal to the world:

Did you know that international students equal the number of students from Iowa on campus? Read what they bring to the campus, what they take away from their experience, and why they go to such extraordinary lengths to study here.

Study abroad has exploded at Grinnell in recent years and now includes access to about 80 programs worldwide. The resulting experiences can be life-changing and career-shaping.

Finally, the international experience doesn’t always end at graduation: “Grinnell Expats: Why Won’t We Come Home” explores the lives of several alumni who’ve chosen to make living abroad a more-or-less permanent arrangement.

Plus: What it is like to be from “everywhere,” the story of a Polish basketball star, Herbie Hancock ’60 on the future of UNESCO, and much more.

It’s coming to your mailbox and the campus mailroom in early April, or read The Grinnell Magazine Spring 2012 (PDF).

Sincerely,

Dan Weeks ’80
