With last year’s web audit under our belt, it’s now time to renovate our website – making it cleaner and more attractive, easier to use and update, more powerful, and more reflective of the tools and information users have asked for. We’ll keep you up-to-date on the project and want to know what you think.

There are some peculiar challenges in building a college website. One of the biggest is the fact that colleges—and thus college sites—have to serve multiple constituencies. Most commercial sites appeal to a single group: customers. Ford.com is for people who want to buy vehicles. NBC.com is for people who like Law & Order spinoffs. From the beginning, we have had a lot of talented students in support and development: Yasir Mehboob ‘03, Yaw Nti-Addae ‘04, Kabenla Armah '04, Jingsheng Wang '08, Mark Root-Whiley '09, Tianqi Zhang '11 and Doug Dobrzynski '13, to name the main ones. Basically, it all started in 2001. Before then, Grinnell didn’t have a website. Well, it did have a web presence, but it was really a collection of unrelated web pages, maintained mostly in Dreamweaver. In 2001, we came up with a system to manage a more unified website, and give it some coherence. We didn’t know then that the type of system we have developed would be soon called “a content management system” (CMS), and that using various CMSs would soon become a de-facto standard in the web...
