Grinnell College's Office of Community Enhancement strengthens Grinnell College by helping to enhance the vitality and quality of life in Grinnell. Two overarching goals guide the activities of the office:
- For the benefit of the College, to make the town a stronger asset in attracting students, faculty and staff
- For the benefit of the City, to contribute responsibly as a citizen.
Major Gifts: The Office of Community Enhancement acts as a liaison between the campus and the
community at large, helping to guide the allocation of major contributions to community projects.
Specific examples include a bike path out to Rock Creek, a new high school gym, auditorium and classroom upgrades, a complete high school science wing renovation, extensive capital improvements to the medical center, renovation and expansion of the Strand Theater, a new public library, a new public safety building, complete reconstruction and upgrade of central business district streetscape and a planned family aquatic center.
Community Mini-Grants: The Office of Community Enhancement also oversees Grinnell College's Community
Mini Grant Program. The Community Mini-Grants provide catalyst funding for small- to mid-scale projects that enhance the vitality and quality of life in the community by addressing issues of importance to Grinnell College students, faculty and staff. Proposals are reviewed each spring by a committee comprised of students, faculty and staff. Past support has gone to a number of projects in the community, including Shakespeare in the Park, Summer Arts Camp, Kites Over Grinnell Festival,
Bike Patrol for the Police Association, a playground enhancement at Fairview School and live broadcasting by GET 12 television.
Smaller-Scale Donations: Finally, the Office of Community Enhancement oversees all of the College's smaller-scale goodwill donations to the community, including the College's Volunteer Initiative Program which allows employees to direct College support to organizations according to where they volunteer.
