Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where are the trips going this year?

A: It's up to you! The semester prior to a trip, applications are made available for leading service an altbreak project.  Student coordinators hold interviews with potential leaders who propose an issue they wish to address in a trip.  For information on current trips see the appropriate tab on the left of this page.

Q:How many trips are there?

A: This depends on how many qualified leaders apply, the size of our current budget and our fundraising goals. During the Spring of 2013, we had 6 trips.

Q: How many people go on each trip?

A: Up to twelve, with two leaders and ten participants.

Q: Where do the trips go?

A: Fall Break trips (typically) stay within 500 miles of Grinnell. For ideas, look at Past Trips or the Database we are still creating. Spring Trip Leaders can apply to go anywhere in the contiguous United States.Locations are dependent upon the issue the leaders are focusing on and the mutual compatibility of potential community partners.

Q: How much is the participation fee for an Alt. Break Trip?

A: Costs are kept to a minimum. The fee for 2013 Spring Break trips is $120.00 per person. Please keep in mind that all participation fees are absolutely non-refundable.

Q: What if I can't afford the trip, but I really want to go?

A: Some Financial Assistance is available to those truly in need. E-mail Alternative Break for more information.

Q Will I be accepted?

A: The best way to guarantee your spot on a trip is to lead one. If you are not leading a trip, the next best way to guarantee your spot is to take time on your application. In the past couple years, most people that apply are accepted as participants.

Q Wow, this sounds like an awesome program. I would like to support it. How can I do so?

A: That's a great question! Everyone can support Alternative Break in some way. Often Alumni and other community members can support our trips by providing housing and/or special meals at the trip location. Sometimes donations are accepted by the organizations that support us.
