Q: Where are the trips going this year?
A: It's up to you! The coordinators hold interviews with potential leaders who propose the location and issue of a trip.
Q:How many trips are there?
A: This depends on how many qualified leaders apply, the size of our current budget and our fundraising goals. During the Fall of 2008-2009, we had 4trips.
Q: How many people go on each trip?
A: Up to twelve, with two leaders and ten participants.
Q: Where do the trips go?
A: Fall Break trips (typically) stay within 500 miles of Grinnell. For ideas, look at Past Trips or the Database we are still creating. Spring Trip Leaders can apply to go anywhere in the contiguous United States.
Q: How much is the participation fee for an Alt. Break Trip?
A: Costs are kept to a minimum. Fall Break is only one week, this fee is yet to be determined. The participation fee for Spring Break trips, which are two weeks long, tends to be higher. The fee for 2009 Spring Break trips was $120.00 per person, again the fee for Spring 2010 is yet to be determined. Please keep in mind that all participation fees are absolutely non-refundable.
Q: What if I can't afford the trip, but I really want to go?
A: Some Financial Assistance is available to those truly in need. E-mail Alternative Break for more information.
Q Will I be accepted?
A: The best way to guarantee your spot on a trip is to lead one. If you are not leading a trip, the next best way to guarantee your spot is to take time on your application. In the past couple years, most people that apply are accepted as participants.
Q Wow, this sounds like an awesome program. I would like to support it. How can I do so?
A: That's a great question! Everyone can support Alternative Break in some way. Often Alumni and other community members can support our trips by providing housing and/or special meals at the trip location. Sometimes donations are accepted by the organizations that support us. For more information about how to donate your time or money to us, please contact Alternative Break for more information.
