- Choose a co-leader.
- Decide what type of project(s) and/or organization(s) you would like to work with during the trip.
- Determine where you will be able to accomplish your goals. Be organized and plan ahead before you make any phone calls.
- Questions to ask a site before deciding to work there:
- Is there enough work for everyone in the group?
- What skills, if any, will the participants need to accomplish the project(s)?
- Does the organization have any prior experience with similar groups?
- Are there any policies, rules and/or regulations that will apply to the group?
- Who will be supervising the project(s)? Do you as a leader need any special training?
- What kind of medical facilites are close by in case of emergency?
- Are there any forms that the participants will need to fill out before they can work?
- Find free housing, ideally within the communtiy where you wil be working. You should ask your site for help finding housing.
- This is the basic framework for the selection of leaders for an Alternative Break trip. A candidate must not be on any type of probation and must fulfill the basic characteristics of a desirable trip leader.
- Candidate Requirements: A Candidate Is…
- A. Not on academic or conduct probation
- B. Of second year standing or higher, unless
- 1. Candidate has comparable experience, as determined by the coordinators, or
- 2. Candidate's co-leader is of second-year standing or higher, or
- 3. Candidate can demonstrate competence.
- C. In the minds of the coordinators, capable of leading an Alternative Break.

- A. Organized
- B. Capable of making both consensus, quick, and emergency decisions
- C. Flexible
- D. Calm
- E. Motivated to serve
