ESL - English as a Second Language -
Iowa Valley Community College

Mission: Works with Iowa Valley Community College and is responsible for working with students who have another language in their background, for integrating students into their classrooms and building language skills, vocabulary and cultural awareness.

Volunteers are needed to help tutor students, to work with them in one-on-one instruction and to help them build vocabulary and confidence.

ADULT EDUCATION - GED PREPARATION AT IOWA VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE - GRINNELL CENTER

Mission: GED classes are held at Iowa Valley Grinnell Center on Monday and Wednesday from 1-4 pm and Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6-9 pm.

Volunteers are needed to work one on one with students, especially helping with reading, math, social studies and science skills. Bi-lingual skills helpful, especially Spanish.

IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION OFFICE
Poweshiek County Office, 114 S. 3rd Street, Montezuma

Mission: This office is part of the Iowa State Uuniversity system, making sure that local people have access to research-based information from the university. We work with community leaders and clubs on various projects and provide programs for youth, schools and families.

Volunteers are needed to work with kids in 4-H clubs and to work on other community projects.

GRINNELL COMMUNITY DAY CARE CENTER
1436 Penrose

Mission: To provide services to children from infancy though 5th grade. The center offers a loving and caring environment, an excellent nutritional program, a structured program of activities that foster each child's mental, physical and social development. There are about 100 kids enrolled and the center is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. through 5:30 p.m.

Volunteers are needed to help with kids, especially in the mornings, late afternon and in infant rooms. Extra help is also needed for special events.

GIRL SCOUTS

Mission: Girl Scouts of Moingona Council offers a comprehensive, informal education program accessible to all girls, ages 5 through 17 years. The Girl Scout program is based on an ethical code, teaches the skills for good citizenship, and stresses the importance of moral leadership. Girl Scouting is a preventative program that strives to give girls a solid base for their future direction and decisions. Girls learn and practice skills for living, full, responsible lives under the leadership and guidance of adult volunteers. And of course, girls have fun!

Volunteers have many opportunities to be active with the Girl Scouts, including leading a troop and helping with programs.

Children and Family Urban Ministries

Mission: Children and Family Ministries in partnership with our neighbor, address the challenges and builds on the strengths of those living near the north side of Des Moines. Seeks to create welcome, nurture and promote economic and social justice by bringing together a broad and inclusive community to share the resources and abundance for all. Offer before and afternoon school programs for students K-8, gender specific programs, nightly community meal, and several community celebrations throughout the year.

Volunteers are needed after school from 3:00-5:30 pm, Monday - Friday to help children with homework, creative activities, and recreation. Skills desired in volunteers are enjoyment of and effectiveness with students' grade K-8.

AFTER SCHOOL CARE PROGRAMS

Grinnell After School Program
Davis Elementary 818 Hamilton

Mission: To provide students with an enrichment of their educational experience through positive and creative activities that promote cooperative learning.

Volunteers are needed to hang out with kids in 3rd and 4th grades, help with homework, assist with crafts and recreational activities.

The Galaxy Youth Center

Mission: The Galaxy is an ongoing partnership between youth and community to provide fun activities, a safe space and educational programming.

Volunteers are needed to help with after school tutoring and homework help; as chaperones for dances and open evenings; to hang out with kids during open afternoon hours; and help with creative programming for the youth center.
