DHS - Department of Human Services

Mission: This office has two sides; one providing services to families in crisis and another providing income maintenance services.

Volunteers are needed to do a little bit of everything around the office, from answering phones to record keeping. If a student can make a commitment to work on a regular basis, volunteers can shadow social workers, and after several months, they may be assigned their own caseload.

HEAD START
Full-Day - Ahrens Family Center, 1436 Penrose
Half-Day - St. Mary's Education Center, 1013 Broad Street

Mission: Head Start is a federally funded preschool program for children ages 3-5, providing children the social, education, health and nutritional services they need to grow up healthy, happy and confident. Grinnell offers two Head Start classrooms, a half-day (12-3:30) and a full day (7 a.m.-5 p.m.) classroom.

Volunteers are needed to help in classrooms, to interact with kids, and to help with preparation of materials and daily routine. Also needed is someone to consistently ride and monitor the bus that picks up and drops off the half-day kids. Child care is also needed on family nights as well as translators for Spanish speaking families.

MICA - Mid-Iowa Community Action

Mission: MICA is a private, non-profit agency delivering programs and services to income-eligible families. MICA operates the Family Development Center in downtown Grinnell, two Head Start classrooms, Women, Infant and Children clinics, housing rehabilitation and weatherization services, the Poweshiek County Food Pantry and employment training programs, and provides crisis intervention services/counseling/referral and information.

Volunteers are needed to work in Head Start classrooms, the food pantry, or to work in the family development center, answering phones and helping people with applications. MICA is also in need of occasional research assistance.

THE SECOND MILE

Mission: Second Mile operates a clothing/household closet that provides for people in need and also sells items at reasonable prices to help raise money. Other programs providing help to thousands of people in Grinnell and Poweshiek County include Christmas Shares, gardening, and Friend-in-Need projects.

Volunteers are needed to sort and organize items as they receive donations, and to put together packets for those in need. Volunteers are also need to serve the public.
