Grinnell College Celebrates 2010 Graduating Class

Four years, dozens of classes, and hundreds of memorable moments after first arriving on campus, Grinnell's class of 2010 crossed the stage for their degrees May 24 at 10 a.m. Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, delivered the Commencement Address.
Commencement was live-streamed on web. Check back in the following couple of days for highlights from the ceremony.  
The ceremony provides a capstone to a weekend full of concerts, receptions, and other events that showcase and celebrate the achievements of the graduates and their time at Grinnell. See the schedule.

Jeffrey Sachs

The Earth Institute supports scientific research, education, and the application of research to advance nine interconnected global issues: climate and society, water, energy, poverty, ecosystems, public health, food and nutrition, hazards, and urbanization. As director of The Earth Institute, Sachs leads large-scale efforts to mitigate human-induced climate change. For more than 20 years, he has been inn the forefront of the challenges of economic development, poverty alleviation, and enlightened globalization. Considered to be the leading international economic advisor of his generation, Sachs also serves as special advisor to the United Nations Secretary-General. In 2004 and 2005, he was named among the100 most influential world leaders by TIME magazine. The author of hundreds of scholarly articles and books, Sachs wrote bestsellers "Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet" and "The End of Poverty." Prior to joining Columbia where he is also professor of sustainable development and professor of health policy and management, Sachs was director of the Center for International Development at Harvard University.

Marketplace, Joe Rosenfield Center 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. Phi Beta Kappa Initiation By invitation, for initiates and their families only. Herrick Chapel 3:30 - 5 p.m. President's Social President Russell K. Osgood welcomes all seniors and their families to a social gathering at his home. Seniors will receive a printed invitation in early May. President's Residence, 1600 Park Street 5 - 6 p.m. Dinner Dining for students and families. Cost is $10 (children under 2, $5). Marketplace, Joe Rosenfield Center 7 p.m. Commencement Vocal Concert Featuring the Grinnell singers and student a capella ensembles. Herrick Chapel  9 p.m. Senior Showcase A talent show in which seniors perform for classmates and guests.  Families are invited for approximately two hours of great entertainment. Sunday, May 23

9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Baccalaureate Includes short addresses by seniors, faculty and the president.  Honorary class members are announced. Herrick Chapel (overflow seating on Herrick lawn) 10:30 a.m. - noon Brunch Dining for students and families. Cost is $8.50 (children under 12, $5). Marketplace, Joe Rosenfield Center 12:15 - 2 p.m. Honor G Awards This athletic award and honor ceremony is held for senior varsity letterwinners and their families. Reception to follow in the Harris Center Concert Hall. Harris Center Cinema 2 p.m. Posse Ceremony A celebration of achievement with Posse students and their families. Room 101, Joe Rosenfield Center Reception following in the Spencer Grill 4:15 p.m. Voluntary Service Send-off Celebrate students doing full-time service work after graduation. Students and families are invited to attend. Room 101, Joe Rosenfield Center 5 p.m. Senior Honors Concert Senior vocal and instrumental musicians perform for families and guests.
