Delivering video and audio clips
I'm frequently asked to help deliver video or audio content to students via the network. Often these requests can be easily accommodated and fall within fair use guidelines. It's encouraging to see
this report talking about how we can make the most of fair use. If you have some media that you would like to make use of in class please contact a CTS to talk about possible solutions.
Developing a new tool for learning vocabulary
I'm currently working on the development of a web-based tool for vocabulary learning. The tool helps learners construct their understanding of a term by presenting them with a multi-modal snapshot of the term in use in authentic language. Related images from Flickr and audio from podcasts accompany more traditional forms of input, a native language gloss and dictionary definition.
Interact with Experts/Authors via Video
This semester I have helped a handful of faculty bring a guest to class via videoconferencing. There are a number of videoconferencing tools that are easy to use and allow the class to come (virtually) face to face with authors of articles or books they're reading, prominent researchers, and experts in the fields they're studying. The ease of use, low cost, and convenience of these technologies allow you to invite people from off campus to participate in your class with very little investment from you and your guest. Contact a CTS if you're interested in learning more about videoconferencing.
Wiki in Pioneerweb
I just finished teaching Max Leung's Contemporary Asian American Issues class how to use the wiki in Pioneerweb. They'll use the tool to build a webpage based on research they do for the course. The wiki allows them to easily create a website that showcases their projects, highlights links and relationships between research projects, and situates their research in the context of Asian American studies at large.
Designing and Deploying Surveys
We recently acquired new software for managing and deploying surveys. I used this software to enable instructors of Intro to Stats to gather survey data that is used in the classroom to teach statistics. Please contact a CTS if you're interested in using a survey in your teaching; this tool is powerful, but easy to use.
