Minutes of April 4, 2002

Noon, Burling Conference Room

Attending: Lee Sharpe, Victoria Brown, John Stone, Doug Caulkins, David Harrison, Bill Francis, John Kalkbrenner, Helen Scott

Lee met with President Osgood to discuss the Bookstore relocation. The Bookstore will remain in place until the Carnegie renovation. There is no room in the Campus Center for the Bookstore. This is not an option.

Faculty office space is a higher priority to the faculty than is the Bookstore relocation.

Discussion of Summer Curricular Development Workshops and Projects:

Regarding workshops that are held over multiple years: Feedback is given to workshop leaders to evaluate and make suggestions for future offerings.

Discussion of the Africana Studies summer workshop:
Questions:
Will there be travel/lodging for the ACM colleague? Other expenses?
Is the workshop open to all faculty?
Is the concentration committee committed to participate?
ISC requests a more complete description of the workshop, specifically, how it is connected to the curriculum.

Discussion of proposal for mileage to attend a conference in July. Approved.

GWS recommendations:
All proposals received have been approved as outlined in each request. (Five proposals totaling $6750)
Discussion of Curricular Development funding:
As we using resources effectively? What about course development outside of GWS, GDS, RECD, etc? Where do faculty go for funding projects that don't fall under these headings?

Should the stipend for workshops be tied to an end product? Suggestion that faculty should receive the stipend after incorporating workshop material into their courses.

How is teaching, curricular development, and advising evaluated? There is really no good process in place.

Should ISC earmark funds for curricular enhancement projects? For instance, speakers, films, field trips, etc.

Should the speaker fund be by application? There is support for inviting speakers whose work is more closely tied to the curriculum.

Executive Council has created a task force to look at the issue of Convocation, Academic Speakers, Alumni Scholars and the difficulties of scheduling speakers in a crowded calendar.

Some departments hold workshops with other colleges to discuss curricula. These workshops usually receive outside funding.

Respectfully submitted,
Terri Phipps

Next meeting: April 18, Discussion of course material distribution and discussion of proposal funding
