Discussion of J-STOR
If J-STOR is purchased this year, the Library will need to pay a majority of the startup
fee. Christopher is working with them to negotiate a plan that would allow the College to
split the startup fees between two fiscal years. Christopher will not know until June
whether his budget can accommodate a portion of J-STOR costs for this year. The
budget committee has committed $15,000 of the 2002-03 budget for J-STOR.
J-STOR does not include many science journals. It is unclear at this how moving to J-
STOR will affect science departments.
The question was raised regarding whether it fell under ISC's purview to fund a portion
of J-STOR costs. The ISC budget mainly inherited from the Faculty Development
committee. ISC's role as the Library/Bookstore committee is mostly in relation to policy.
Discussion of document delivery
Electronic reserve costs are absorbed by the Library; course packet costs are absorbed
by students. Some electronic reserve items can be hot-linked to J-STOR without
additional costs being incurred.
Christopher distributed a draft of Library Reserve Policy for future discussion.
It was suggested to poll the divisions regarding their views on document delivery: paper
use, amount of acceptable risk, etc.
- Discuss preferences in terms of e-reserve vs. course packets.
- Remind faculty to be supportive and respectful of the Bookstore.
- What form of document distribution are they using?
- Pro's and con's of free and unlimited printing for students
- Christopher and/or Gail have agreed to attend the division meetings to provide
- information and answer questions on this matter.
April 4 meeting:
Discuss summer workshops (notice will need to go out)
Discuss last year's ISC report
Respectfully submitted,
Terri Phipps
