11:00 Burling Conference Room
Attending: Christopher McKee, Victoria Brown, Helen Scott, John Kalkbrenner, Lee Sharpe, Todd Armstrong, John Stone, Doug Caulkins, David Harrison
Monica Chavez was invited to share the community perspective of the proposed Bookstore relocation.
Relocating to the central business district would be most beneficial.
Corner of 6th and Park would be useful, but would not serve the same purpose for the downtown area.
The College does not want to compete with other downtown businesses. The Bookstore sells insignia clothing and books.
Downtown parking is an issue. If the Bookstore is moved downtown, it may help the city move toward some improvements.
--Setting up "time zones" could be helpful, but would need to be enforced. Suggested: 1 hr parking in downtown area, 2 hours in next block, 24 hour after that.
When students buy semester books, how do they get them back to campus?
--They could order online and have it delivered to the mailroom.
--Public transportation is still under discussion.
Bookstore will need a modern computer system to track inventory and speed processes.
The Bookstore needs evening and weekend hours (Barnes & Noble-style). It could not be closed during College breaks.
6th and Park (across from the Welcome Center) would make a good entryway to the College and would put a good "face" forward. The community would see that location as an improvement, but would be disappointed that it didn't locate downtown.
Social Studies Division: Strong interest in 6th and Park location. A new building would allow spatial needs to be considered and would enhance the community. The Division passed a resolution stating that Mears Cottage needs to remain dedicated as a teaching and learning space.
Copy Connection is going into the old Longhorn Restaurant building (near McNally's). It will become a public copy center. Conversations with Grinnell Graphics indicate that the Copy Connection will not be in competition with their services.
President Osgood indicated that it would take two years to complete a new building at 6th and Park. Faculty need to determine priorities as to office space before a decision can be made. Suggested office spaces are Mears, houses on the west side of Park St., and the current Bookstore location.
Faculty in English and History need to set priorities regarding the three suggested office spaces. One set of priorities could be based on housing the department in one location, and the other set of priorities could be based on leaving some faculty members where they are and moving others.
Renovating the Bookstore would be the fastest solution to providing more office space; however, the Bookstore would need to be relocated. If it is moved downtown and then moved back to the 6th and Park location when completed, it could be detrimental to community relations.
If faculty are moved to the current Bookstore location, would they want their windows to look out onto a high-traffic area? Need to address the issue of confidentiality in office space.
Discussion of curricular development proposal:
A faculty request for student labor to assist in developing a website was approved for 8 hrs/week for 14 weeks.
Respectfully submitted,
Terri Phipps
