Noon, Burling Library Conference Room
Present: Victoria Brown, Lee Sharpe, Doug Caulkins, John Stone, David Harrison, Christopher McKee, Bob Grey, Helen Scott
The ISC will meet every other Thursday at noon this semester. Next meeting will be February 14 to discuss course material distribution. Gail Bonath will be invited to the discussion.
We will discuss the 2000-01 summary reports that ISC received at the beginning of this term at the March 14 meeting.
Update on J-STOR: The President has offered partial support of the start-up costs, i.e., The Budget Steering Committee has approved partial support towards the startup cost within the 2002-03 budget. ISC needs to discuss how to support the remaining costs.
Update on laptop proposal: Seven faculty have requested laptops under this experiment. Funding is available for 15. ISC approves all seven requests. ISC would like to note that more faculty are interested in the program, but feel that now is not the right time for them.
Future agenda item: The question remains as to what data is being collected from P-cards.
Discussion of faculty survey results that were distributed via email: The PDF file was formatted in such a way that it could not be printed or excerpted. While this may have been done in an effort to provide some measure of confidentiality, faculty feel that documents should circulate freely on campus. This format should not become the default.
Bookstore discussion:
ISC received input from divisions.
English Department is divided on the issue, as is ISC. Senior members heard from do not want to move. Junior faculty are willing to move, but senior faculty want them close and suggested the Bookstore space as an alternative office space location.
History Department is divided as well. Most members do not want to move Bookstore. History faculty passed a motion to keep Mears as a Teaching and Learning space.
Humanities division: It is acceptable to use the Bookstore as office space.
Divisions are strongly divided on the issue of moving the Bookstore in general, as well as on the issue of using the Bookstore for office space. ISC takes the position that given this disagreement, the Bookstore should not be moved at this time.
The Bookstore would be most convenient in the Campus Center-if there is parking nearby. The southwest corner of 6th and Park would perhaps be a more welcoming location for the community.
ISC feels that there are two decisions to be made, one in the long-term and one in the short-term. The College needs to address the issue of office space in the short-term. ISC feels that the College should reintroduce into the campus plan the issue of the Bookstore being included in the Campus Center.
Question: What will happen to the Forum once the Campus Center is built?
ISC moves that there is not enough agreement among faculty to warrant moving the Bookstore in the short-term, and that the issue of including the Bookstore in the Campus Center be revisited. All present agreed on this motion.
Respectfully submitted,
Terri Phipps
