Noon, Faculty House
Attending: Doug Caulkins, Martha Voyles, David Harrison, John Stone, Ralph Savarese,
Helen Scott, Bill Francis, John Kalkbrenner
March 11 minutes approved.
Technology Issues:
Blackboard: Discussed sharing of course information with issue of privacy. Bill
will check into whether or not a course could be made available without allowing access
to the Discussion Board.
Web: Quite often, the text on the College's home page does not match the
accompanying picture. Also, some experience problems with the home page
automatically refreshing-old data appears instead. Anyone experiencing problems
should contact Leonya Ivanov (webmaster).
There is also the issue of compliance with alternative systems such as those
used by sight-impaired users.
ITS emergency response procedures: ITS is currently using multiple venues to
inform the campus of outages and other issues, including mass email, call tree, and
have recently instituted an info line, x4357, to allow campus members to call for updates.
One member suggested that ITS use an automated reporting system. Bill explained that
such a system would give too many false positive reports, for instance, when the system
goes down but then immediately comes back online. Bill felt that these false positives
would cause more anxiety than necessary.
Webserver statistics/logs: One member brought up the issue of webserver logs
and statistics. A second server has been installed. Leonya is working on the log
system. Leonya is also working on access to individual pages.
WebMail is being replaced by WebAccess at the end of fall semester.
WebAccess offers more options than are currently available in WebMail.
MSWord for Email: We discussed the issue of sending MSWord attachments
through email. Some members of campus cannot easily open these attachments. It
was suggested that ISC recommend a policy against sending MSWord attachments.
ISC decided that this was an individual decision and will not make a recommendation.
Anyone who has difficulty opening MSWord attachments should contact their CTS for
instruction on sending and receiving various forms of email. John S. will contact the
faculty in question regarding this decision and suggestion for assistance.
Technology orientation: This is done for new students and new faculty. Is it
effective?
One member returned to the issue of P-Card information, what is being obtained,
and how it is being used. This issue sparked a debate among the members-many of
whom see it as a financial system issue rather than an instructional issue. John K.,
explained where the information is collected:
-The electronic antenna is used to open locks. This information is collected by
Security.
-The bar code is used in time clocks.
-The magnetic strip controls a debit account, used for meal plans, copiers,
washers, etc. This is also collected at OGF.
The ISC tabled the discussion indefinitely as being of little actual relevance to the
committee. P-Cards are not in ISC's purview.
Summer Workshop Proposals:
GWS: ISC conditionally approved. Workshop should target faculty who will teach
the course in the near future. The ISC endorses opening the workshop to faculty who
may not currently be teaching in GWS.
Prairie Studies (two): Members discussed why the ISC needed to approve
proposals from areas using their own funds. Our duty is to make sure the proposals
follow guidelines and that funds requested are appropriate. The ISC approved both
Prairie Studies workshops as proposed.
