Noon, Faculty House
Attending: Ralph Savarese, Doug Caulkins, John Stone, David Harrison, Vince Eckhart, Martha
Voyles, Christopher McKee, Mark Montgomery, John Kalkbrenner, Bill Francis, Helen Scott, Don
Smith
Approval of December 11, 2002, minutes tabled pending revision. Committee members should
direct comments to Terri, who will compile them and send to the committee prior to the next
meeting.
One faculty member has requested travel funds to assist MAP student with research. The MAP
program does not fall under the ISC's purview. Request denied. Faculty member should request
funds elsewhere.
Bill Francis distributed a draft document on the increasing use of technology at Grinnell. He
noted that the campus currently has good staff support from ITS. The document outlined areas
that are currently lacking:
-Tech Resource Center: This would include staff support for high-end hardware and
software and adequate space for walk-in convenience.
-Help Desk area: A place to go for in-depth support. The current Help Desk is too far
from ITS staff to get their help when needed. Placing the Help Desk area near or in the Tech
Resource Center would lead to better-trained Help Desk staff and greater convenience for the
campus.
-Multi-media (AV) support: Current space is too small and inconveniently located. This
area needs more space and easier access for its customers, as well as access to ITS as they
work very closely together. It would be helpful to consolidate resources.
-ITS staff are currently spread in Darby, AV, 1102 Broad, and Younker. When Darby is
demolished, ITS will spread to seven total locations, making it very inconvenient and inefficient in
cases of emergencies such as system crashes and viruses. It is essential for colleagues to work
near each other. ITS could make do in the Forum in order to consolidate, but the space is not
ideal and would eventually be too small. ITS will need a separate storage area for large
shipments, etc.
Concerning laptop carts: How would this program be affected by ITS centralization? Would the
carts be pulled into one building? The carts would stay in the separate buildings. Damage to the
computers is likely if the carts are moved outside often. Reservations would be made through one
central location.
Interaction between ITS and the Library would be enhanced by close proximity. Library staff have
specific program knowledge that ITS staff don't have.
John S. asked Don Smith to attend this meeting as Don has concerns about the master plan. He
suggested that the ISC take an active role in making specific recommendations to administration
concerning buildings and their usage.
A Trustee suggested to Don that the College delay building the Campus Center for one
year to allow time to build a new gym first.
Don suggested that the Forum be used as a Crossroad of Academics. The Forum can
be used for various types of events: teaching, conference rooms, events, department/division
meeting space, etc. He suggested that ITS would be better served by a new building. The
current buildings have historical value for the campus.
Pros & Cons of using Forum for ITS:
Pro: Central location, easy access. Tech Center can be close to library and science facilities.
Con: New building would be more adaptive for future technologies, rather than trying to make
something just adequate work. The Forum would ultimately be too small.
The Forum will need to be made ADA compliant. It is believed that the main floor can be leveled
off without difficulty. An elevator core can be added for basement access. However, more
changes would need to be made to be completely compliant.
The ISC agreed to add preparing this recommendation to its agenda this semester.
