Continued discussion regarding ITS location:
One member suggested building a facility between ARH and Science, as had been
proposed in an earlier version of the campus plan. The Forum could then be used for
SFS offices, coffee shop, etc. The Forum was never intended to be used as an ITS
facility, and so was not architecturally designed to suit that purpose.
Using the Forum for SFS office space may be an under use of a prime campus location.
Some members expressed the need to have some sort of food/beverage service remain
in the Forum as a convenience for south campus.
Another member pointed out the high cost of construction, utility and maintenance costs
associated with a new facility. The initial construction costs are 5-7% of the lifetime cost
of a facility. A $5 million facility will cost approximately $100 million over its lifetime. It
seems much more cost effective to use the Forum for ITS than to build a new facility at
this time. The College needs to address the future growth needs of ITS and the campus
as a whole.
This member also expressed the opinion that a building in this area would inhibit the
view and give the impression of a closed campus.
Housing ITS in the Forum would allow ITS, CTS and Library staff to work more closely
together, and ultimately be more effective for clientele wishing to use their services.
Tools are increasingly shared between CTS and Library staff for document
management, etc.
The ISC did not reach consensus on this issue, but realize the importance of making a
recommendation to faculty for discussion as soon as possible. Bill and Helen will draft
questions to raise with SBRA concerning proposed costs for renovating the Forum vs.
building a new facility. The ISC will continue this discussion when this information has
been received.
The ISC does recommend that ITS be housed in a consolidated facility on or adjacent to
central campus. John S. will draft a recommendation and distribute to the committee via
email for suggestions and approval.
