Minutes of September 18 were approved.


Discussion of "civic engagement" language for curriculum development proposal 
guidelines.  The Committee voted against inclusion.


Concerning guidelines for curricular development proposals:  The ISC made numerous 
suggestions regarding wording and inclusion.  


DRAFT:

  Proposals are more likely to be funded if they


    * exemplify and facilitate new or more effective kinds
      of teaching;


    * use technological tools or skills that instructors
      would be unlikely to acquire without special funding;


    * relate to courses that are, or will be, taught
      frequently;


    * relate to one of the following areas of curricular
      development;


    * have already been partly implemented, so that some
      course materials can already be examined and
      assessed;


    * come from instructors who have not recently received
      similar grants;


    * might not be implemented as part of normal course
      development.




John Stone will contact chairs of Concentrations that are not included on the curricular 
development application to see if they would like their Concentrations listed.


Regarding department chair signature on course development proposals:  The ISC will 
need to determine what the signature implies.  Will it act as an endorsement of the 
project, or merely show that the department chair is aware of the project?


Discussion of the Library's Statement on Information Literacy:  The ISC suggested minor 
wording changes.  Christopher will pass these suggestions on to the document's author.  


Discussion of flexible fund for the Associate Deans' governance:  Helen will draft an 
outline of the types of projects and expenses that would be funded from this budget as 
well as a projected budget.
