Minutes of the September 6 meeting were approved.
Review of Curricular Development application process:
- Faculty submit applications to Associate Deans' Office.
Associate Dean forwards applications to appropriate committees.
Associate Dean sets a deadline for committees to submit recommendations.
Each committee returns the applications it considered to the ISC, with a letter stating the committee's recommendations.
The ISC considers the applications and awards funding.
Discussion of the process experiment undertaken last year:
It is important to have another committee look at overall budget allocations. This allows for increased flexibility.
Discussion of faculty stipends:
- Should we continue them, or change the structure?
Should we give workshop participants their stipends when they start the workshop, when they complete it, or when they teach the classes for which the workshop prepares them?
Should we consider curriculum-development proposals exclusively or mainly from concentrations, or try to support proposals throughout the curriculum? Priorities can be set campus-wide.
It was the consensus of the Committee to continue this experiment for another year. Helen and John Stone will send a note to the Concentrations regarding deadlines for returning application materials.
Discussion of guidelines for curriculum development proposals
The committee discussed possible guidelines for evaluating proposals, including that of advancing the cause of civic engagement and social justice. Discussion was inconclusive and will be continued.
Discussion of funding Tutorials:
Tutorial proposals will be considered as any other proposal and must follow the same guidelines.
