Attending: Vince Eckhart, Susan Ireland, Bob Cadmus, Ralph Savarese, David Ellison, Martha Voyles, John Kalkbrenner, Bill Francis, Terri Phipps
Minutes of 31 March approved with minor revision.
Discussion of summer workshop proposals:
American Studies/Africana Studies. Approved. Co-leaders will receive stipends of $800 each, participants $650 each. Lunches will not be provided, but mid-morning refreshments will. Faculty who plan to propose workshops in the future need to be aware of the impending change in workshop guidelines. Proposals (and reports) should state what the final product(s) of the workshop will be and be clear about how workshop time will be used.
Prairie Studies. Approved. General question regarding Centers: Are directors compensated for leading workshops as part of their contract? Vince will contact Jon Andelson regarding ISC’s guidelines (final product, expected outcome, stipend standards, etc.). ISC requests a report from workshop participants even though it has separate funding.
Writing Lab. Declined. This project seems to be more in the research phase than being at a point to create actual modules. ISC suggests that the Lab be funded for the equivalent of developing a new course ($1,600). This stipend can be given to one member or split. Once the research is complete, ISC will consider a workshop proposal in the future to complete the project. ISC suggests that one or more Lab members meet with faculty in Iowa City to see how their program works.
Discussion of individual proposals:
English. Applying for course revision rather than development. ENG 224 does not have a standard syllabus; each faculty who teaches it creates their own. Faculty member is trying to broaden the basic focus of the course. Can an argument be made to request CIS funding? ISC requests more information. The request to fund Tutorial development has been denied.
English. “ Faculty member will include a larger rubric on race, ethnicity and gender than is normally offered in this course. No decision at this time.
Remaining proposals have been tabled until the next meeting.
