ISC Minutes

12 November 2003
Noon - Faculty House

Attending: Vince Eckhart, Bob Cadmus, David Ellison, Martha Voyles, Ralph Savarese, Susan Ireland, John Kalkbrenner, Bill Francis, Christopher McKee, Helen Scott, Terri Phipps

Minutes of October 29 approved as distributed

Discussion of curricular development proposals:
Statistics: Statistics has interdisciplinary impact. One concern of this proposal is how portable the data sets will be across departments and disciplines. The committee approved the proposal, recommending that this concern be voiced so leaders could structure data sets accordingly.

Spanish: Committee members were concerned about what projects could be displaced if the CTS took on this project. Helen and Bill are working with the CTSs to manage their workload and projects, though the system is still in transition. Creating websites such as the one proposed takes a lot of time, but the CTS involved has met with the faculty member and has agreed that it will fit into his schedule. The committee feels that this is not a new course, but a revision of a course, and so approved at that level.

English: English Department already has a post-colonial course. This proposal supports and expands this area. Concerns: How does this proposal fit into the English department curriculum? Will this unit reproduce someone else's work? Ralph will talk with Saadi Simawe and report back to the committee. The committee approved this proposal contingent on Saadi's response. The stipend will be divided between GDS and CIS.

A statement will be added to the curricular development guidelines that proposals are stronger if endorsed by the department and/or concentration.

Discussion of computing issues:
Brad Bateman, Chair of FOC, would like a recommendation indicating what should fall under ISC's purview. He will then take this recommendation to the faculty.

One member suggested changing "instructional" computing to "academic" computing in the committee's charge. The committee agreed to pursue this change. It will need to go through FOC to the faculty. Vince will notify Brad Bateman of the request.

John Stone would like a response to his September 8 memo to ISC. Bill will distribute the ACUP with changes highlighted. Committee is not ready to respond at this time.

Future agenda item:
Bookstore location. Issues concerning the Bookstore fall under ISC's charge. A previous ISC configuration discussed this issue in-depth. Helen can retrieve material if requested.
