Discussion of Curricular Development Grant Applications:

Statistics: Some members questioned whether this fell under normal course development. Statistics is not supported by just one department; it is taught by faculty across divisions. The ISC requests more information to determine how this differs from normal course development and clarification on the portability of data sets developed. That is, how likely is it that faculty from other disciplines will be able to use the data sets?

English: The ISC feels that the case needs to be stronger, but will wait for CIS and GDS's recommendations before acting further.

Spanish: Are there copyright issues for the documents being incorporated? Faculty member will be utilizing a good deal of CTS time for this project. Aside from the web aspect, how does this differ from normal course development? Is the course being restructured or are documents just being placed on the web? Will the department continue to use this website after faculty member is gone? (term position) The ISC will discuss further after recommendation is received.

Discussion of ITS strategy as outlined by Vince:

Bill hasn't met with the Dean to discuss the report. The report offers three main points concerning virtual communities:

The community should seek to include alumni and could include outsiders at invitation of GC faculty, staff or students

  • The College should seek legal counsel on this document
  • There should be at least one community offered by GC for all constituents.

Bill's impression was that some parts of the report could be tighter, and that it should be sent to legal counsel for review.

The Trustees are aware of Plans issues and are interested in the legal aspects of its use. Because of this, the sense of urgency to address this issue is less.

“Plans” is functioning well from off campus, but the ISC foresees some legal and PR issues surrounding Plans not being hosted on campus. First, it costs money to host Plans off campus. Some alumni have donated money for this purpose. Second, it could very well send a negative message to students about the college's views on censoring and freedom of speech. Members agreed that Plans needs to be monitored for threats, slander, etc. The committee recommended adding a Grievance Procedure to Plans front page so that people would know the proper actions to take when encountering offensive pages.

    Discussion of academic computing issues:

    The ISC endorses the following:

    c) We copy to FOC whatever we send the Dean, and we send a separate note to FOC, something like: "ISC requests a voice in computing issues that concern instruction but should not be responsible for giving advice on computing policies that do not concern instruction. We recommend that FOC consider redefining the responsibilities of ISC regarding computing issues and consider whether it would be valuable to have another faculty body oversee computer issues."
