Attending: Bob Cadmus, Susan Ireland, Mark Schneider, David Ellison, Katya Gibel Azoulay, Christopher McKee, Bill Francis, John Kalkbrenner, Jon Chenette, Terri Phipps Meeting schedule:
Tutorial field trip proposal approved up to $100. Terri will send approval notice. Proposals with a budget of less than $200 will be sent to the committee via email for objections only. These proposals will be discussed only when necessary. Emails will be termed "ISC Fast Track Decision" so that members can respond promptly. Question of having student representation on ISC as per Faculty Handbook guidelines. Should the meetings always be open or should the students be invited to attend when applicable? Guidelines state that there should be two student representatives: one appointed by SGA and one by SACC. ISC members would prefer to have the same students serve a full academic year. ISC will contact SGA and SACC to appoint students. Representatives will be welcome at all meetings, and will be notified when meetings are more relevant to student issues. Student representatives will be asked to write a brief summary for the S&B of the meetings they do attend. Committee members agreed to work individually or in small groups on issues between meetings, but wanted some flexibility in the scheduling of that effort. The Associate Deans' Office will handle some proposals that require confidentiality. One example is working with a faculty member who received a poor review to ensure that he or she obtained the skills necessary to improve performance. The Associate Deans' Office may inform the full committee of the general nature of such decisions as it deems appropriate. ISC guidelines should connect with the College's objectives. We need to make faculty aware of funds that are available; for instance, Faculty-Faculty Tutorials, Discussion Groups, Field Trips, curricular and/or pedagogical initiatives that may change over time, as well as support through Lilly, Freeman, Mellon and other grants. There is concern that faculty -- new and experienced -- may not be aware of all the types of funding available to them. Curricular Development
Application form: Discussion of TDC: Should CTS and Library staff hold regular advertised hours? This was not very successful last year. Bill and Christopher are responsible for making sure their staff are scheduled when and where appropriate. A suggestion was made for CTSs to keep a log of their office hours and activities. This would be very difficult and time-consuming for them. The CTSs are very mobile -- talking to faculty, other CTSs, providing support to various offices, etc. After a lengthy discussion, the committee decided to give the TDC another month to get settled into its role on campus and allow Christopher and Bill time to adjust their staffs' schedules. The ISC and faculty as a whole should help make the TDC something that will be useful to them and fill their technology needs. Bob will collect comments from faculty about what they want the TDC to be. This issue will be addressed again in October. With CTSs already spread thin on campus, who will be responsible for making sure technology works in each of the classroom, and who should faculty call if there is a problem? Some faculty are moving away from using technology because they are uneasy about getting the support they need. ITS is working toward having documentation in all classrooms housing technological equipment. They have installed telephones in an additional 12 classrooms with a list of people to call if problems arise. They are working on a 5-minute response time to these calls. Faculty who will be using technology for the first time, or if they are unsure of how to use the technology, can also arrange for a CTS to be present or available for the class period. |
