At the 8 November 2007 meeting "Environmental Challenges and Responses" an idea arose to consider offering a 1-credit lecture and discussion course each semester dealing with environmental issues. The central goal behind the idea was to provide a substantive forum for sustained discussions of environmental issues, involving as many interested faculty and students as possible. At a subsequent meeting in December, the group developed a structure involving 6 lectures (by faculty or invited speakers) attended by all enrolled students (and open to the entire campus), with subsequent 1-hour periods devoted to small group discussions of 10-14 students (only those enrolled in the course), team-led by at least two faculty per small group. Numerous other details were discussed - minutes of the meeting are available from Kathy Jacobson.
The goal of the 31 January meeting will be to further develop a syllabus so that the course can be included in the Course Listings for Fall 2008 (deadline 18 February). Issues remaining to be discussed are appropriate student workload for a 1 credit course, opportunities for student and faculty interaction with speakers, and possible speakers for the Fall and Spring semesters. All faculty are welcome to attend.
