International Studies and Concentrations

The members of the Advisory Board of the Office of Interdisciplinary Studies and David Harrison, director of the Center for International Studies, invite faculty members interested in international studies and involved in our several area studies concentrations (e.g. Latin American Studies, East Asian Studies, etc.) to a lunch discussion to address the following questions:

  • How have our area studies concentrations changed over the past decade with the addition of new faculty and new areas of inquiry?
  • What has been successful (and what has been less successful) in drawing students to the concentrations or in managing their offerings?
  • Are there ways that different area studies concentrations could link up with interdisciplinary fields that cut across different geographic boundaries, such as environmental studies, geography, international relations, international affairs, international policy, and international development?
  • In what ways could the Center for International Studies be supporting faculty and students in the concentrations, or in finding new areas of collaboration among them?
  • Should we be exploring an International Studies concentration that would allow students to combine different courses from different disciplines?

Those involved or interested in (non-area) concentrations that have a global perspective (e.g. Global Development Studies, Environmental Studies) are also welcome to this discussion. The Advisory Board is especially interested in exploring new ways in which the area studies concentrations could collaborate to promote international education. This meeting is intended to examine different modes of collaboration and to discuss the relationship between Grinnell courses with international content and the Center for International Studies.
