Humanities Core Curriculum

For a number of years, faculty in the humanities have been discussing the possibility of expanding the offerings of the Humanities Core Curriculum beyond the currently offered HUM 101, 102, 140. Generally, strong interest has been expressed in offering new courses that explore the Humanities in post-1600 contexts, involve team-teaching, and are interdisciplinary. Specific suggestions have been made for courses in the following areas: aesthetics, comparative literature, cultural and media studies, gender in specific historical contexts, intellectual history, and performance. These issues have been discussed this year in two division meetings but this lunch will make it possible to give some more sustained attention to the issue and specifically to the following questions. How might we structure additional offerings in the Humanities Core? Is there any interest in the possibility of a major or concentration in "General Humanities" (on the model of the major in General Science)? What specific courses would individuals be interested in teaching? What specific courses might we conceivably offer in the next few years?
