GRINNELL COLLEGE - DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
(SECONDARY SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHER EDUCATION)
TENURE-TRACK POSITION (START FALL 2009)

Grinnell College invites applications for a tenure track position in Secondary Social Studies Teacher Education beginning August 2009 at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. Candidates must have a PhD (or ABD, at the rank of instructor) in social studies education or a related field. Grinnell College is a highly selective undergraduate liberal arts college. The College's curriculum is founded on a strong advising system and close student-faculty interaction, with few college-wide requirements beyond the completion of a major. The teaching schedule of five courses over two semesters will include a course on issues or topics in social studies education of interest to a wide variety of students, a secondary social studies methods course, and an introductory/foundations education course. Education faculty also teach the Tutorial, a writing/critical thinking course for first-year students, oriented toward a special topic chosen by the instructor. Candidates should have public school teaching experience, and we prefer candidates with experience in post-secondary teaching and/or supervising student teachers.

The Education Department is presently looking to add emphases in alternative/at risk schooling models and in the schooling of language minority students. Candidates who can contribute to either of these directions should describe pertinent experience or expertise in their letters of application. Candidates also should describe their interest in developing as a teacher and scholar in a liberal arts environment that emphasizes close student faculty interaction, and explain how they can contribute to efforts to cultivate a wide diversity of people and perspectives, a core value of Grinnell College. To be assured of full consideration, please send a letter of application, c.v., a copy of graduate transcripts, a statement of teaching philosophy, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent by December 15, 2008 to Jean Ketter, Department of Education, Grinnell College, Grinnell Iowa 50112. [EducationSearch@grinnell.edu], (641)269-3157; fax (641)269-4414.

Grinnell College is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer committed to employing a highly qualified staff that reflects the diversity of the nation.
