Departments of History and Religious Studies

MIDDLE EASTERN HISTORY AND ISLAMIC RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS

Tenure-track position in the Departments of History and Religious Studies (Middle Eastern History and Islamic Religious Traditions), starting Fall 2010. Specialization in the modern period (post-1800) is preferred; specialization in other periods will be considered. This will be a joint appointment in the Religious Studies and History Departments. Assistant Professor (Ph.D.) preferred; Instructor (ABD) or Associate Professor possible.

Grinnell College is a highly selective undergraduate liberal arts college. The College's curriculum is founded on a strong advising system and close student-faculty interaction, with few college-wide requirements beyond the completion of a major. The teaching schedule of five courses over two semesters will include introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses, including a survey of Islamic Religious Traditions and a survey of Modern Middle Eastern History; every few years one course will be Tutorial (a writing/critical thinking course for first-year students, on a special topic chosen by the instructor). The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop other courses in the area(s) of specialization, and will play a key role in the college's current initiative to develop a broader interdisciplinary curriculum of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies.

They also should discuss what they can contribute to efforts to cultivate a wide diversity of people and perspectives, a core value of Grinnell College.
