GRINNELL COLLEGE - DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY (NEUROPHILOSOPHY)
TENURE-TRACK POSITION (START FALL 2009).

Grinnell College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Philosophy (Neurophilosophy), beginning in Fall 2009. Assistant Professor (Ph.D.) preferred; Instructor (ABD) or Associate Professor possible. Grinnell College is a highly selective undergraduate liberal arts college; the Philosophy Department values the history of philosophy and is committed to representing both the Anglo-American and the Continental traditions of philosophy. The College's curriculum is founded on a strong advising system and close student-faculty interaction, with few college-wide requirements beyond the completion of a major. In response to its recently completed strategic plan, Grinnell College seeks to enrich its liberal-arts curriculum by expanding its interdisciplinary and integrative offerings. To that purpose, it invites applications for a tenure-track appointment with expertise in neurophilosophy. AOS: the successful candidate will be expected to develop new intermediate and advanced courses in philosophy and n euroscience, and to contribute to the College's interdisciplinary concentration in neuroscience. AOC: Open, but the successful candidate should be able to teach a historically oriented Introduction to Philosophy and, every few years, a Tutorial (a writing/critical thinking course for first-year students, oriented to a special topic chosen by the instructor). In addition, the ability to develop a course for the College's general curriculum is desirable (e.g., Humanities, Philosophy of Technology, or Introduction to Statistics). The teaching load is five courses over two semesters.

In letters of application, candidates should discuss their interest in developing as a teacher and scholar in an undergraduate, liberal-arts college that emphasizes close student-faculty interaction. Candidates should also address how they can contribute to efforts to cultivate a wide diversity of people and perspectives, a core value of Grinnell College. To be assured of full consideration, all application materials should be received by December 1. Send letter, c.v., three confidential letters of recommendation, sample of writing, graduate transcripts (copies are acceptable), and statement of teaching and research interests to: John Fennell, Chair, Search Committee, Department of Philosophy, Grinnell College, Grinnell, IA 50112-1690. Contact information: PhilosophySearch@grinnell.edu, tel. 641-269-3157, fax 641-269-4414.
