GRINNELL COLLEGE - TENURE-TRACK POSITION IN POLICY STUDIES (DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS AND/OR POLITICAL SCIENCE). START FALL 2009.
Grinnell College's Policy Studies Concentration invites applications for a tenure track appointment in policy studies (appointment in either Department of Economics or Political Science) at the assistant professor or associate professor rank beginning fall 2009. A Ph.D. preferred, ABD (Instructor) considered, in one of the following: Political Science, Economics, or Public Policy. Grinnell College is a highly selective undergraduate liberal arts college. The College's curriculum is founded on a strong advising system and close student-faculty interaction, with few college-wide requirements beyond the completion of a major. The Policy Studies Concentration will offer an interdisciplinary approach to the study of policy analysis. Prior teaching experience is desirable. An attractive candidate will be able to teach courses in either the Political Science or Economics Departments, or conceivably both, in addition to ability to teach at least one 200-level policy course, with prospects for teaching in a 300-level
team-taught policy course, and an ability to teach statistics. The team taught course will emphasize a fully interdisciplinary approach to policy, drawing on contributions from the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities. The successful candidate will teach five courses per academic year, usually with one repeat, including one or two sections of policy studies, one course in statistics, and several courses in either Political Science or Economics at the introductory and 200-levels, and possibly the 300-level, with some discretion over fields of emphasis. Every few years, one course will be the Tutorial (a writing/critical thinking course for first-year students, oriented toward a special topic chosen by the instructor).
In letters of application, candidates should discuss their interest in developing as a teacher and scholar in an undergraduate, liberal-arts college that emphasizes close student-faculty interaction. They also should discuss what they can contribute to efforts to cultivate a wide diversity of people and perspectives, a core value of Grinnell College. To be assured of full consideration, all application materials should be received by October 20, 2008. Send letter of application, graduate transcript, CV, writing sample, three confidential letters of recommendation, end-of-course evaluations (if applicable) and statement on teaching philosophy to William Ferguson, Policy Studies Search, Grinnell College, Grinnell, IA 50112-1690. [PolicyStudiesSearch@grinnell.edu], 641-269-3173, 641-269-4985 (FAX).
One or more representatives of the policy studies search committee will plan to attend the APSA meetings in Boston on Aug. 28-31, 2008 and the APPAM meeting in Los Angeles, Nov. 6-8, 2008. Preliminary interviews for the most promising candidates who cannot make those meetings may be conducted by phone sometime after Oct. 20, 2008.
