Architects are returning to campus the week of May 6. There will be an open forum during their visit for more discussion. The architects will be asked to clarify the reason for demolishing Darby among other issues. The Committee also felt the Board of Trustees should discuss their decision for tearing down Darby gym.
The Committee discussed concerns that were submitted to them from the campus community. Student art gallery space was one concern. Lighting, display cases, and whether the space should be strictly for students were some of the issues presented. The Committee felt it should remain a student space and also recommended that Lesley Wright and Dan Strong from Fine Arts meet with the architects and discuss various proposals and needs. The next issued raised was whether the building should be called the "Grinnell College Center" or "Grinnell Campus Center". It was tabled as Committee decided we didn't need to resolve this issue soon.
Discussion followed about opposition to demolishing Darby gym expressed by a campus member. The campus member was told keeping Darby might compromise the campus center structure. The Committee discussed ideas of using Darby as part of the campus center or integrating parts of the gym into other structures such as the new field house.
The Committee also talked about needs in the campus center that have been brought to members attention: photocopy machine and bulletin boards in the entryway, stand-up computer stations for checking email, having the help desk located there, and a sound proof game room were discussed. Concerning the help desk, the Committee thought Bill Francis should be consulted for input.
A memo was sent to student organizations asking for their ideas and needs in the center. One need presented was to make sure it's set up for wireless communication, but it's too soon to have much input. Discussion followed about 24 hour access in some areas. The Committee felt a proposal from student affairs personnel, security and students should be considered before any decision was made concerning 24 hour lock up. Faculty members also wanted to make sure student concerns for the future use of Cowles and Quad were considered by the Committee. As of now, Cowles will be not be used as a dining hall and Quad will be used for special events. Another campus member thought the campus center should be built on Mac field and tied more closely with the Harris Center. Discussion followed concerning this issue.
The Committee will meet again on Wednesday, May 1 at 3:00 p.m. in Forum PDR B.
