Campus Center Planning Committee Meeting Minutes May 1, 2002

Those present were: Rebecca Stumpf, Linda Price, Dick Williams, Barb Trish, Tom Crady, Sheree Andrews, John Kalkbrenner, Dixie Hansen, Bob Cadmus, Michael Sims and Mark Godar.

Tom Crady distributed agenda items concerning campus center issues and those were discussed. Agenda item number one involved discussion concerning the new grill. It was reported there's a strong feeling among the campus community that hot food such as burgers, hot dogs, fries, etc. be served. Discussion followed about menu items and the grill design.

Agenda item number two involved discussion of building a small movie theater for performing arts films. Fine Arts does have space for these films but would like to have access to refreshments after the film which the Fine Arts building doesn't have. The Committee felt the space should have multipurpose uses, not just for a small movie theater. Flexible space could be used for the theater and would be used in conjunction with an existing room.

Agenda item number three involved discussion of seminar/conference rooms. The Committee talked about whether there should be academic classrooms in the campus center. They felt there should be a clear vision about how the rooms should be used. After 4:00 p.m. the space could be used as meeting rooms. The Committee felt Gerry Adams and Jim Swartz should be consulted about classroom needs.

Agenda item number four involved discussion of temporary office space. Will this space be used for Grinnell College personnel or visitors who might need to use a fax machine, a phone or make a copy? The Committee felt the space should be used primarily for visitors. Discussion followed concerning the use of the campus center as the best place for office space. The Committee felt maybe empty buildings such as Mears might be a better place for temporary office space. The Committee felt a recommendation should be made not to put temporary office space in the campus center.

Agenda item number five involved discussion of display cases and a kitchen for the multicultural groups. Tom reported seeing display cases at another institution and they were very impressive. The Committee felt these were design issues and were in the architect's plans.

Discussion followed about the architect's campus visit May 16 and 17. A member reported that faculty were tired of important meetings being held at the end of the semester when stress levels were high and the campus community was so busy. The consensus was to request the architect visit the week of May 6. Tom and Mark will call Darin Cook on Thursday, May 02 to discuss the Committee's concerns. Discussion followed about Committee member's availability this summer for meetings and interviewing the food consultants.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, May 8 at 3:00 in Forum PDR F.
