Those present were: Mark Godar, Dixie Hansen, John Kalkbrenner, Frank Thomas, Linda Price, Barb Trish, Katie Pieper, Joseph Oppong, Rebecca Stumpf, Bob Cadmus, Dick Williams and Tom Crady.
The meeting was held in the Cub's Room at the PEC with Darin Cook, architect with Cesar-Pelli, meeting with the Committee. Three different designs of the campus center were presented. The Committee talked about all three schemes, how each design could be interchanged and what space was most useful for each area.
The Committee discussed the idea of having a courtyard facing eighth avenue and whether this was a good plan. This plan might present a safety issue as many students will cross eighth avenue from the science building as well as going to the campus center. Discussion followed about crossing eighth avenue as it's heavily traveled and how many students will be going to eat in the dining hall at different times which will increase student traffic across eight avenue.
The question was raised as to whether the restaurant would serve hot food such as burgers, hot dogs, fries, etc. or will it be similar to the grill? The placement of the restaurant near the dining hall was also discussed. Some Committee members felt it would be better to have the restaurant in another area away from the dining hall.
The entryways into the building were also discussed. The main entryway area will have a telephone, computer access, etc. A Committee member felt the game room should be close to the entryway and accessible to other areas. The Committee member also felt the game room should also be sound proofed and separate from the dining hall.
The Committee discussed with Darin Cook the dining hall space and after hours usage. College space for conferences and visitors, especially the dining hall after hours, was discussed.
Twenty-four access to a quiet place to study and have computer access was raised. Could the dining hall space be used for these purposes? Student Committee members felt it was important to have places for late night activities and studying. Students like the social interaction. Could academic buildings be closed after 12:00 a.m. and the campus center be used for computer access? Darin said there will be small areas in the campus center for late night study.
The dining hall configuration was revisited. Students were concerned that the dining hall would be one big room. Discussion followed. Seminar rooms and PDRs space was also a concern. A Committee member asked if space for a language table would be available. Darin Cook said a PDR would be large enough to accommodate their needs.
Parking was discussed at length since there will be so many employees and so little parking space. Mark assured the Committee that small lots will be added around the fringe of the campus to keep ahead of the parking problems. Parking issues will need to be addressed. Tom felt he should talk with Russell about this issue.
Darin wanted the Campus Center Committee to discuss where various offices should be. Is it feasible to have the post office in the lower level? Traffic flow and natural lightening were two issues of concern. A Committee member thought the post office location should be on the main level because of traffic patterns. A student Committee member thought the lower level would not be a problem as students will go there no matter what.
A faculty member raised the question of where large events will be held when Darby is demolished such as commencement and the waltz. Tom stated that a new field house would encompass these events.
Discussion followed about the open forum tonight (May 8) in Science 1023.
