The Darin Cook and Phil Nelson represented Cesar-Pelli
Discussion opened with a request that the meeting rooms also serve as classrooms. The faculty pointed out that classroom space is at a premium on campus and it would be nice to have the option of using these meeting rooms for classrooms. Some flexibility could be added with movable furniture. It was pointed out that if the rooms are used as classrooms they couldn't be used for meetings unless the rooms were reserved for a block of time during the day for each component. There are 9 rooms that could be used for meeting rooms. The architects talked about the configuration of these rooms. They can be used for a conference room and a classroom. There's a big need on campus for classrooms which will hold 25-30 people. The rooms as they're designed now will hold 20-25 people. The committee agreed that the rooms should be able to be used as classrooms during the day. Removable dividers in the rooms were discussed. The architects wanted to know how much flexibility the College wanted in these rooms. It's not always e
asy to break these room dividers down. There will be a divider in the multi-purpose room. One committee member felt we should have the option of larger rooms. Partitions will affect acoustics. Students feel these rooms are being made for administrators.
The vending machines, ATM machine and game room area was discussed. This area is being designed for use when the building is closed so students can still have access to this facility. If this area is accessible 24 hours a day a security camera will be installed. The size of the post office has been increased as well as another entrance added. The layout of the game room with games, TV etc. in proximity to the post office and vending was discussed. ATM's with 24 hour a day access must have a security camera. This camera would reduce vandalism. The question was raised as to who would have access to these tapes. The tapes are kept for a short time and then discarded. Many felt a camera shouldn't be near the post office boxes. More discussion followed about 24 hour access to this area. A student committee representative thought the international students would want 24 hour access.
Isolating the camera exposure to one area would be more desirable. The camera can also be seen as a plus for safety. It was pointed out that the camera would not be placed for watching people, just for security. Vending machines will be on the east side.
Darin talked about information gained from various groups during the last visit. The size of the post office was increased, otherwise design stayed pretty much the same. The design will get more specific. By the end of December, 25% of the design package will be completed. The design is progressing as more information is gathered.
The Leadership Environment Energy Design (LEED) will be involved in the energy issues of the new campus center. The Green Round Table will come to campus to discuss our goals for energy issues. Lighting, recycling, building waste, heating, cooling and air recycling are some of the issues considered in the energy design. Mark Godar and Dave Clay will be involved in these decision making issues. A construction company will be chosen at the beginning of the year. The company will be involved in all energy saving issues. Composting was also discussed with a committee representative stating that President Osgood and the College is interested in this. Collecting food was for composting was also discussed.
New drawings will be here before the next meeting. There was discussion about campus visits to Central, Carleton and Macalester to see their dining centers. The architects will return in December.
