Minutes From the Campus Center Planning Committee 10/9/02

Present were Tom Crady, Frank Thomas, John Kalkbrenner, Michael Sims, Sheree Andrews, Bob Cadmus, Barb Trish, Dick Williams, Mark Godar, Brian Turner, Joseph Oppong, Rebecca Stumpf and Eli Zigas

Representatives from Cesar-Pelli were Darin Cook, Phil Nelson and Lucianno Mello Representative from Thomas Ricca was Al Moller

Darin talked about the design development presentation to the Trustees. The selection of materials was presented to the Trustees and more detail issues will be discussed. Local building materials will be used whenever possible. The architects will bring building material options to the committee for review. Building materials which are environmentally friendly with durability, longevity, etc. will be desirable. The architects are now at the end of the schematic design which is the relationship of one space to another, site access, etc. The architects are entering the design development which should continue through May. Cesar is looking over the Campus Center design and Thomas Ricca is looking at the dining needs. Darin explained the layout of each floor. Landscaping was also discussed. The pathways will be linked with landscaping to the Campus Center, dorms and other campus buildings. The architects will look at how spaces function internally. Outside space on the north side of the building was discussed as an area for student usage. Most locations are fixed now in the design but there will be flexibility with the inside space. Al Moller talked about the dining service space. Lower level is mostly storage. First level has many different dining options. The question of congestion during peak dining hours was raised. Al thought students should have their food and be seated within six minutes. Students would go to one area to get an entree and then go to another area to get another. This would eliminate the line and students would be spread out within the dining area at various food stations. A student committee member commented on the fact that students are resistant to the idea of a mall food court and students don't want brand name foods marketed. A suggestion of designing a map for the dining area was discussed. Committee members thought this was a good idea especially for perspectives. A late night meal option was also discussed. Current students need to think about the dining needs of future students. An east side entrance was discussed again. The architects feel the east side is too congested with loading docks and traffic for an entrance. The lack of parking was addressed especially for the handicapped. The parking issue raised the question "Is this building just for the campus or the campus and community?" This issue was discussed in regards to parking. Ventilation of the craft workshop which is located in the lower level was also discussed. The architects and dining service consultant will return in four to five weeks.
