Grinnell's Commitment to Iowa Scholarships 

Reflecting Grinnell College's longstanding commitment to the students and citizens of Iowa, the College will award a minimum of $10,000 to every Iowa resident who is admitted to Grinnell beginning in the Fall of 2013. This award, which may be one of the scholarships listed below, is renewable at the initial amount for three additional years provided a cumulative GPA of 2.75 is maintained. There is no separate application required, but students receiving grant, loan, or employment assistance must complete Grinnell's regular financial aid application process each year by our published deadline.    

HOWARD R. BOWEN SCHOLARSHIP

The Bowen Scholarship was established in 1987 to honor Dr. Howard R. Bowen, president of Grinnell College from 1955 to 1964. To be considered for this $25,000 scholarship, the applicant must be an Iowa resident. Bowen Scholars receiving grant, loan, or employment assistance in addition to the Bowen Scholarship, must complete Grinnell's regular application process each year by our published deadline.

TRUSTEE HONOR SCHOLARSHIP

Awarded for outstanding academic achievements, the Trustee Honor Scholarship is merit assistance and does not have to be repaid. If you are receiving grant, loan, or employment assistance in addition to the Trustee Honor Scholarship indicated on your award notification, you must complete Grinnell's regular application process by our published deadline each year. Once you have paid your deposit, a special certificate for the Trustee Honor Scholarship will be sent to your high school principal for presentation at graduation or honor ceremonies.

Grinnell performs a comprehensive review of each applicant's qualifications for admission and merit aid. Though most successful applicants are outstanding high school students, we do value other dimensions of the application including (but not limited to) the essay, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, and demonstrated commitment to one's family and/or community. We do not use a simple formula to determine the admission of our applicants. Similarly, our decisions about scholarships are reached through a comprehensive review of each admitted student's unique qualifications. Consequently, it is possible for students with similar academic records and test scores to receive different awards.

JOSEPH F. ROSENFIELD SCHOLARSHIP

The Rosenfield Scholarship was established in 1987 by Joseph F. Rosenfield, Grinnell College Class of 1925, to provide scholarships for Des Moines students to attend Grinnell. To be eligible for consideration for the Rosenfield Scholarship, a student must be currently enrolled as a senior at one of the following high schools:

  • Dowling High School
  • East High School
  • Hoover High School
  • Lincoln High School
  • North High School
  • Roosevelt High School
  • Urbandale High School
  • Valley High School

New Rosenfield Scholars chosen from each school will receive $10,000 per year provided a cumulative GPA of 2.75 is maintained. In addition, the Application for Financial Aid and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed by February 1. Rosenfield Scholars receiving grant, loan, or employment assistance in addition to the Rosenfield Scholarship must complete Grinnell's regular application process each year by our published deadline.

STAFF/Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) TUITION REMISSION

The award covers a percentage of the tuition portion of our comprehensive fee and applies only to on-campus study and Grinnell-in-London. It is not available for other study abroad or elsewhere in the U.S. In addition, this award is based on your parent's continued employment at a participating college. Eligibility determination requires that the employed parent contact his or her home college to complete the required official paperwork. Any change in employment status must be reported to our office immediately. If you are receiving grant, loan, or employment assistance in addition to the tuition remission indicated on your award notification, you must complete Grinnell's regular application process each year by our published deadline.
