DEAN OF STUDENTS

A leader in the Division of Student Affairs, the Dean of Students (DOS) leads staff and comprehensive and integrated programs for Grinnell College students, including residence life and housing, new student orientation, intercultural affairs, and judicial affairs. The DOS is a student-centered, collaborative, and intentional educator - and reports to the Vice-President for Student Affairs, working closely with other Student Affairs leaders and personnel, faculty, and students on an intellectually rigorous campus.

Responsibilities: Leadership of staff and programs for residence life and housing, new student orientation, intercultural affairs, and judicial affairs: staff selection, training, supervision and performance evaluation; program mission, priorities, and performance assurance; budget management; evaluate practices and engineer improvement strategies; assess services and student learning outcomes; develop and implement policy; custodian of confidential College and student records; facilitates crisis preparation and response; coordinate appropriate assessment of services and student learning outcomes; remain professionally current with knowledge and practice; consult regarding legal, ethical, and risk management issues; collaborate with staff in Campus Safety; collaborate with hearing boards, including the coordination of appropriate training; serve as a dean on-call. Participate actively in Divisional and College activities and leadership: lead or serve on Student Affairs and College committees; advise st udents and student groups; attend campus events; support Student Affairs and College initiatives. Remain professionally active and current: affiliate with appropriate professional organizations in housing, orientation, multicultural affairs, judicial affairs, general student affairs, and higher education fields; attend and present at regional and national professional conferences; remain current regarding related professional practices, legislation, and other appropriate trends. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: A master's degree in higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling or other area relevant to student affairs; minimum of seven years of increasingly responsible experience (with at least four years post-master's) in a college or university residence life/housing, orientation, intercultural/multicultural affairs or judicial affairs setting (experience in all four areas highly preferred).

Experience and skills in: office and staff administration and leadership; providing positive leadership and staff supervision; effective written and oral communication (interpersonal and public speaking); organizing and prioritizing; effective outreach programming; outcomes assessment; working effectively in a diverse environment; responding to crisis and emergency situations; handling and protecting sensitive and confidential information and records; knowledge of and/or experience with selective, residential liberal arts campuses; understanding of and appreciation for college student development issues and the student affairs field.

Preferred Qualifications: Study or degree at the doctoral level; live-in experience at a small, residential college or university; knowledge of and experience working with LGBTA (queer) students and issues of gender, sexual orientation and gender identity; knowledge of and appreciation of the Grinnell College tradition of self-governance.
