WHEREAS, At its September, 1999 meeting, the Trustees of Grinnell College accepted a
comprehensive facilities plan, which is one facet of institution-wide planning;
WHEREAS, Starting in the fall of 2001, the College has engaged in a budget process, the
success of which is predicated upon the articulation of a mission statement, core
values, and strategic priorities/goals; and
WHEREAS, Given that, at its February, 2002 meeting, the Trustees of Grinnell College
approved a mission statement that the faculty had endorsed, the Trustees of
Grinnell College recognize that it is timely to undertake a formal institution-wide
planning process.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE TRUSTEES OF GRINNELL COLLEGE:
1. The Trustees of Grinnell College endorse the importance of formal institution-wide
planning. In so doing, the Trustees of Grinnell College recognize that a plan should
result in the articulation of overall goals for the College that will ensure for the future
a College of excellence that "aims to graduate women and men who can think clearly,
who can speak and write persuasively and even eloquently, who can evaluate critically
both their own and others' ideas, who can acquire new knowledge, and who are
prepared in life and work to use their knowledge and their abilities to serve the
common good."
2. In furtherance of this overall goal, the President is authorized to implement a formal
institution-wide planning process with the objective of developing a set of strategic
recommendations for consideration by the Trustees of Grinnell College.
