Voice mailboxes are created for faculty and staff by request. If you would like to use the voice mail option at Grinnell College, please contact the ITS Main Office at ext. 9990. Standard storage for messages is as follows:

  • Ten minutes of "read" (Saved) messages may be retained. This does not affect "unread" (new) messages. Callers will still be able to leave messages for you when the storage limit for read messages has been reached.
  • Fourteen days is the maximum for retaining "read" messages. Again this does not affect "unread" messages. Read messages will automatically be purged from the system after fourteen days.
  • Maximum message or greeting length is five minutes.

Message Waiting Indication: Message waiting indication for new messages is performed via the message waiting light or stutter dial tone. In order to use the message waiting light, you need a M8009, M8314, M2008 or M2616 model phone. These model numbers may be found on the bottom side of the phone. If you do not have one of these models, contact the ITS Main Office at ext. 9990. ITS keeps these phones in stock. Stutter dial tone is used if the phone does not have a message waiting light (i.e. cordless units). Stutter dial tone sounds like a slow busy tone and you must pick up the handset or activate the phone to hear it.
