AMIDEAST Area and Arabic Language Studies
- The AMIDEAST Area and Arabic Language Studies program in Morocco, in partnership with Mohammed V University, features the intensive study of contemporary Moroccan culture taught in English or French, together with Arabic language instruction.
- Historical crossroad between North and South, East and West, Morocco has embraced a wide diversity of cultures and integrated them into a homegrown cultural hybrid. Pre-Islamic, African, Berber, European, and modern technological cultures intermingle to create contemporary Moroccan society.
- The program consists of three major academic components: Arabic language at the intermediate and advanced levels, courses in the social sciences and humanities taught in English, and French language classes for students who have a background in the language. Arabic language courses include a required class in Moroccan Colloquial Arabic; Intermediate Modern Standard Arabic, and Advanced Modern Standard Arabic.
- In addition to French language courses at the intermediate and advanced levels, very advanced students may enroll in a directed study on Francophone Moroccan Literature or other subjects. Social Science and Humanities courses include: Cities of the Islamic World, Anthropology of the Middle East and the Maghreb, Contemporary History of Morocco and North Africa, Islam and the West, and Issues in Contemporary Moroccan Culture.
- Field trips are offered to cities and historical sites in Morocco, including Marrakesh, Berber villages, northern Morocco, and the desert. Non-credit internships and service-learning opportunities are available in businesses, international institutions, and non-governmental organizations in Rabat.
- Housing is provided in homestays with local families.
- Eligibility: At least one semester of Arabic. French strongly recommended. Coursework relevant to study in the region recommended.
