Minnesota Studies in International Development (MSID) Program in Senegal focuses on development and social change through classroom study and field placements. The semester is divided into three parts: seven weeks of classes in the capital, Dakar, six-weeks of field study, and a week-long final seminar.

  

  • Location: Dakar, Senegal.  Field placement in Dakar or rural area. 
  • Language of instruction: French
  • Courses: Curriculum includes theory and practice of development, national and regional history, economics, culture, and intensive Wolof, the majority ethnic language of Senegal.
  • Academic themes: French, Francophone Studies, Global Development Studies
  • Field trips: include a variety of sites such as local markets and other areas around Dakar.
  • Housing: Home-stays
  • Prerequisites: French majors: 300-level French.  Non-majors: French 222.  Coursework on Africa, development, and Francophone Studies recommended.
  • Calendar: Fall and Spring semester.
