Pitzer college in China

  • Exclusively for neuroscience students, the Pitzer in China program offers an opportunity to study Chinese language, culture, society, and traditional medicine while participating in research projects with Chinese neuroscientists. Offered in cooperation with Beijing University, classes are taught by university faculty, scholars and specialists.
  • All students take the "Core Course", a cross-disciplinary study of Chinese society and culture, including history, religion, philosophy, art, and economy, providing the context for learning from a wide variety of cultural immersion experiences offered throughout the program. The intensive study of Chinese language - offered at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels - is required.
  • In addition, neuroscience students will take a course in traditional Chinese medicine, combining theory and practice with an introduction to special medical techniques. The program also features an independent study project, which is conducted in the neuroscience laboratories of the University of Beijing under the supervision of Chinese researchers.
  • Field trips are offered as an integral part of the Core Course to such famous sites as Wutaishan, Pingyao, Suzhou, and Shanghai.
  • Students are housed in dormitories for most of the semester with Chinese roommates and also in homestays of ten days to two weeks each with urban and rural Chinese families.
  • Eligibility: Highly selective program requiring advanced study in neuroscience and recommendation of the Program Adviser. Prior study of Chinese strongly recommended. In cases of equally qualified candidates, students with Chinese language background will be preferred.
