American University Center of Provence (AUCP) in Marseille

  • The AUCP program in Marseille, the largest port in France and important crossroad of Mediterranean cultures, features the study of cultural complexity in the most ethnically diverse city in the country.
  • All courses are taught in French and students sign a language pledge to speak only French during their stay. The program is taught by local experts and professors from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques, l’Université de Provence, and La Maison Méditerranéenne des Sciences de l’Homme, focusing on French and Arabic language and civilization, Middle East area studies, immigration issues, inter-religious communication and cross-cultural mediation.
  • On-site courses in France are supplemented by a one-week field study in Tunisia in the fall semester and Morocco in the spring, combining lectures, visits, and guided contact with the local population. The French Practicum, the required core course, provides a strong link between academic work and direct cultural contact, featuring guided reflection on the student’s overall experience.
  • Additional courses include: French and North African Cultural Patterns, Immigrant Identities in Contemporary France, French Linguistic Strategies for Integration, Arabic, Understanding Islam, Inter-religious Communication, and Middle Eastern Political Developments, among other offerings.
  • Housing is provided in homestays with local families.
  • Eligibility: Minimum GPA of 3.0. Fifth semester level in French. Recommendation of the French Department.
