The focus of ICCS Sicily, as in its sister program in Rome, is on classical languages as well as local history and civilization in the ancient Mediterranean world. Based at the University of Catania, located in a city with a rich ancient, medieval and Baroque history, this program offers extensive local academic resources and close proximity to both the mainland and other towns on the island. Positioned at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, Catania is home to substantial collections of Greek and Roman antiquities. All ICCS-Sicily students are required to take four courses per semester, three of which are required: Mediterranean Cultures, Greek or Latin, and Italian language, which is offered at the elementary, intermediate and advanced levels. As a fourth subject, students may take either a second classical language or art history, focusing on the baroque era. The Mediterranean Cultures core course covers a wide historical context from pre-histor y to post-classical times and focuses on physical evidence and topography over a wide geographical area. Weekly full-day excursions are offered within Catania and to sites in eastern and central Sicily, such as Enna, Leontini, Acrae, Piazza Armerina, and Morgantina. Students participate in extended week-long field trips to sites in western Sicily, such as Agrigento, Selinunte, Marsala, Motya, Segesta, Palermo, Himera, or Cefalù and possibly to sites in North Africa. Housing is provided in an Italian student dormitory within easy walking distance of the University of Catania. Eligibility: Eligibility: Major in classics or art history with strong classical interests. Minimum GPA of 3.0.
