Internationally recognized for teaching and research, the University of Manchester is one of an elite group of British research universities particularly recommended for science division students or those who wish to work on advanced projects in the social sciences or humanities. Founded in 1851, Manchester is the largest civic university in the UK with an international student body of over 18,500 students and 3,000 members of faculty. Most of its academic departments are ranked among those of the top ten UK universities, and the science, social studies , and humanites divisions are consistently rated in the top five, along with Cambridge and Oxford. Between 1906 and 1993, the university produced 20 Nobel laureates. Manchester houses the most powerful university computing center in the country and one of the top academic libraries. Teaching consists of lectures and small group tutorials with a heavy emphasis on independent study. The university is located in the northern city of Manchester, famous as the birt hplace of the industrial revolution and now an international center for business, education, and media. In the midst of an urban revival, the city features six theatres, two symphony orchestras, several art galleries and museums as well as its own distinctive youth culture offering fashions and music for every conceivable taste. Within easy reach of Manchester are many areas of historical interest as well as three of Britain's most popular national parks, Snowdonia in North Wales, the Lake District in Cumbria, and the Peak District, visible from the university campus. Housing is provided in single rooms in dormitories (with meal plans) or apartments with cooking facilities.
